A major employee benefits vendor says offering counseling to workers with disability insurance makes good business sense.

Aetna Inc., Hartford, will offering employee assistance program benefits automatically along with long-term disability insurance plans for employers with 51 or more employees.

Aetna also will be offering automatic access to EAP benefits for members insured through Aetna’s association and affinity programs.

Aetna is building EAP services into its LTD program because of research that shows that depression can increase the length of time that a sick or injured worker is unable to work, the company says.
