ACORD Speeds Up Standards Process

ACORD has announced a major change in the way it develops the rules that help insurance industry computer systems communicate.

ACORD, Pearl River, N.Y., has announced at the 2006 ACORD LOMA Insurance Systems Forum in Las Vegas that it now will send members the first candidate releases for each standard about 2 weeks after votes on standards, then send members a final specification about 6 weeks after voting.

Up till now, ACORD has held votes on maintenance requests every six months, the group says. ACORD staff members built approved changes into the existing specification, then sent the results to members for approval. In some cases, members had to approve several rounds of changes, ACORD says.

The new process should cut standards development time to a few weeks, from several months, ACORD says.
