Loyal American Life Insurance Company has developed a rider that could increase the appeal of long term care insurance for baby boomers.

Loyal American, New Braunfels, Texas, says its new Maximum Life Benefit Acceleration Rider, or Value Rider, offers policyholders who file claims before age 65 access to a much bigger pool of money than the policyholders normally could tap if they filed claims later in life.

The rider can help consumers who are unable to afford a lifetime benefit collect extra benefits if they suffer catastrophic illnesses or injuries relatively early in life, according to Loyal American, a unit of Great American Financial Resources Inc., Cincinnati.

The pool of cash available for early claims is 4 times as large as the usual pool, Loyal American says.
