A unit of StanCorp Financial Group Inc. hopes to find a bigger market for its investment expertise.

StanCorp Investment Advisers, an arm of StanCorp, Portland, Ore., will be widening the scope of efforts to sell investment advice to individual consumers, StanCorp says.

StanCorp, the parent of Standard Insurance Company, says the company’s retirement plans business has been serving customers since 1932.

The business has been offering stand-alone financial advice to employers since 2000.

Now the business will be offering advice to individuals with at least $100,000 to invest, the StanCorp says.

The individual investment advice unit, to be marketed under The Standard brand name, began counseling individual consumers in Oregon in 2004, and it now plans to expand nationally, StanCorp says.

StanCorp is starting by introducing the unit in some markets in the West.
