A unit of Health Care Service Corp. is introducing a short-term medical product for individuals and families in the Prairie State.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, Chicago, says it will sell the new SelecTEMP PPO short-term health insurance plan through agents as well as through the Web.

The medically underwritten plan is available to children as well as adults.

Eligible consumers can buy coverage for terms ranging from 1 month to 6 months. Consumers who meet Illinois Blue requirements can renew the coverage for a second term after the first term ends.

Deductibles range from $500 to $5,000. Illinois Blue will pay 80% of covered expenses for insureds who meet their deductibles, then cover 100% of eligible out-of-pocket costs over $1,000 up to a lifetime maximum of $5 million.

Insureds can use the Illinois Blue in Illinois and the national Blue Cross and Blue Shield network when traveling in other states, Illinois Blue says.

For an eligible male age 20 to 24 with a $1,000 deductible, the monthly premium would range from about $40 to about $60, Illinois Blue says.
