A large insurer is backing efforts by a nonprofit group to teach children about civics and money management.

A foundation affiliated with New York Life Insurance Company, New York, is giving $500,000 over 2 years to the National 4-H Council, Chevy Chase, Md.

The 4-H Council will use the grant to form 40 4-H clubs in Georgia and upstate New York. The clubs will teach children in low-income areas about the democratic process.

The grant also will provide scholarships for club members and adult volunteers who want to attend a week-long 4-H summer leadership program in Washington.
