A Midwestern health carrier is expanding its menu of Medicare supplement insurance plans.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, a unit of Health Care Service Corp., Chicago, is selling Medigap plans K and L.

Plans K and L are designed so that high co-payments, deductibles and coinsurance rates help hold down monthly premium costs.

Members have an out-of-pocket maximum of $2,000 for Plan L and $4,000 for Plan K, but the monthly premium can be as low as $63 for Plan K and as low as $87 for Plan L, according to Illinois Blue.

Purchasers can get a discount on their monthly premiums if they agree to go to in-network hospitals for non-emergency care.
