A large retirement services provider is expanding its health and productivity business.

The company, Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, Columbus, Ohio, has agreed to acquire FutureHealth Corp., Hunt Valley, Md., for a price that was not disclosed.

Nationwide is best known in the life and health market for selling annuities, life insurance and retirement plans, but it also sells employers services to manage the cost of employee health care and employee absences.

FutureHealth is a health management firm founded in 1992 that provides disease management, case management, utilization management and maternity management services.

The firm also develops wellness programs and runs a nurse advice line.

FutureHealth will complement Gates, McDonald & Company, a Nationwide subsidiary in the absence management market, but FutureHealth will continue to have offices in Maryland and operate under its current management team, Nationwide says.

Nationwide has named Holly Snyder, a senior vice president, to run its health and productivity business.
