A foundation affiliated with Blue Shield of California says it will be giving $5.7 million to California nonprofit groups.[@@]

The foundation, formed by California Blue, San Francisco, says it will be giving $1.6 million to programs aimed at combating domestic violence, $2.7 million to programs that will increase the accessibility and affordability of health care, and $1.4 million to programs aimed at improving health care through advances in medical technology.

One of the technology grants, for $313,000, will help San Diego County emergency rooms to build a electronic messaging system that will help uninsured patients obtain some form of health care coverage, according to the California Blue foundation.
