Colonial Supplemental Insurance has eased underwriting requirements for one type of employee-paid insurance.[@@]

Colonial, Columbia, S.C., a unit of UnumProvident Corp., Chattanooga, Tenn., says it has reduced the time an applicant must be free of cancer to 5 years, from 10 years.

Colonial believes it can cut the time that an applicant must be cancer-free because of improvements in procedures for detecting and treating cancer.

Colonial’s cancer insurance includes cancer screening benefits, the company says.

Colonial cancer insurance also pays lump-sum benefits to help insureds cover the cost of inpatient hospital care, radiation treatment, transportation, and other products and services needed as a result of cancer.
