Star HRG, a pioneer in the mini medical plan market, has introduced the Fundamental Care family of limited-benefit health insurance plans.[@@]

Star HRG, Phoenix, a unit of UICI, North Richland Hills, Texas, hopes to sell the plans to employers that cannot afford to offer traditional major medical plans to all employees, or any employees.

The richest package, which sits somewhere between mini medical plans and major medical plans on the benefits spectrum, will cost about 25% less than a typical major medical plan and will provide up to $50,000 in annual benefits per insured, Star HRG says.

Only 2% of insureds file more than $30,000 in claims in a typical year, Star HRG says.
