MIB Group Inc. will be looking into its vast life insurance application database to help relatives of Hurricane Katrina victims and Hurricane Rita victims learn if the victims had life insurance policies.
MIB, Westwood, Mass., is offering the free service to close relatives of individuals who may have died in the same storms that destroyed their records.
The MIB database contains records for life insurers that issue about 90% of all individual life insurance policies sold in the United States.
Relatives of storm victims can get free access to the Policy Locator Service by completing a “special affidavit in lieu of death certificate.”
The form is available at http://www.mib.com/hurricane.
Relatives of storm victims can use the form without having the court certificate of appointment, death certificate and letters of testamentary normally required of insureds’ next of kin, MIB says.
MIB says it developed the simplified affidavit procedure to help survivors cope with the storms’ destruction of paper records.
