Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois is trying to make it easier for families to buy health coverage for children.

The health carrier, a unit of Health Care Service Corp., Chicago, will be making many of its individual and family plans available to parents who want to buy health coverage solely for their children.

Before, Illinois Blue required parents to pay a full family rate for family coverage even if they wanted coverage only for their children.

The child-only policies available through the program will cover emergency care, hospitalization, physician and surgery services, prescription drugs and well-child care, Illinois Blue says.
