HSA Bank is getting serious about giving consumers the ability to drive their health plans.[@@]

The health savings account administrator, a unit of Webster Financial Corp., Waterbury, Conn., says it will be offering HSA holders the services of My Medical Control L.L.C., Louisville, Ky.

Advocates of “consumer-driven health care” have talked about giving patients the ability to escape from traditional managed care provider networks and negotiate their own rates.

In practice, many patients have had a tough time dickering with doctors.

My Medical Control says it can solve that problem by using its own “fair pricing” database to review and negotiate claims on behalf of individual consumers.

HSA Bank customers can have My Medical Control review claims before they pay the medical providers from their HSAs, HSA Bank says.

“When applicable, My Medical Control’s staff will intervene directly with the provider and settle a claim,” HSA Bank says.

My Medical Control collects its fees by taking a portion of any savings negotiated, HSA Bank says.
