The U.S. Department of Labor has issued a subpoena to a Morningstar Inc. unit seeking information about the firm’s services to retirement plan providers and sponsors.[@@]

Morningstar, Chicago, disclosed that the DOL is seeking information and documents about its Morningstar Associates LLC subsidiary, a registered investment advisor..

“We believe the request from the Department of Labor is related to the requests we received in December 2004 from the New York Attorney General’s office and the Securities and Exchange Commission with respect to the work we offer to retirement plan providers, including fund lineup recommendations for retirement plan sponsors,” said Joe Mansueto, chairman and chief executive officer of Morningstar.

Mansueto added that his company is “fully cooperating with all 3 agencies and support the work they are doing to help protect the interests of investors.”
