A Minnesota insurer will be giving members of a new health plan some information about what in-network hospitals and outpatient surgical centers really charge plan members.[@@]

The insurer, Medica Health Plans, Minnetonka, Minn., will be making procedure price information available to consumers who join its new Patient Choice Insights plan.

The plan will charge higher coinsurance and copayment rates for visits to some network doctors and hospitals than for others.

One feature, a Hospital and Outpatient Surgery Facility Guide, will show actual contracted facility rates for selected services at some network hospitals and surgery centers.

The prices will be the actual prices included in the facilities’ provider contracts, not the facilities’ list prices, Medica says.

Medica says it believes the guide may be the first guide available to consumers that will provide the true, discounted care prices.

Medica will start by offering the plan to self-insured employers in the Minneapolis area. When it gets regulatory approval, it will start offering the plan to insured groups.

Medica is a nonprofit carrier that provides or administers health coverage for 1.2 million Minnesota residents.
