Group disability insurers protected 36 million U.S. workers against long-term disability in 2004, 5% more than they protected in 2003.[@@]

The number of U.S. workers protected by group short-term disability policies held steady at about 15 million.

JHA, Portland, Maine, has published those results in its latest annual group disability market survey.

The disability risk management and consulting firm found that premium revenue from new sales of long-term group disability insurance were flat and that premium revenue from new sales of short-term group disability fell 4%.

But premium revenue for group policies already in force increased 5% for STD coverage and 7% for LTD coverage, JHA reports.

JHA researchers found that some survey participants were doing far better than others.

“Group disability sales were mixed in 2004, with some companies up and others down,” JHA President Drew King says in a statement about the results.

The survey attracted 36 participants.
