A New Jersey health insurer has introduced an individual policy that can offer unusually low rates for young Garden State residents.[@@]

AmeriHealth New Jersey, a unit of AmeriHealth Inc., Mount Laurel, N.J., says prices for its new AmeriHealth IHC Preferred Plan start at $190 per month for individuals.

AmeriHealth also is selling to couples and families. The company is basing the rates on the subscriber’s age and gender.

AmeriHealth already has started enrolling consumers in the new plan, and the plan will open for business May 1, the company says.
