Researchers at UnumProvident Corp., Chattanooga, Tenn., have reviewed records for 27 million insureds to see what health problems force workers off the job.[@@]

The researchers found that pregnancy and back injuries are major causes both for UnumProvident’s short-term disability claims and UnumProvident’s long-term disability claims.

Pregnancy is the top reason for 21% of STD claims and complications of pregnancy lead to 10% of LTD claims, according to the UnumProvident researchers.

Back injuries lead to 7% of STD claims and 9% of LTD claims.

Cancer, the most common trigger for LTD claims, is the main trigger for 12% of LTD claims, researchers report.
