A Boston-based unit of Manulife Financial Corp., Toronto, has hired 2 lawyers.[@@]

The unit, John Hancock, has named Kevin Cloherty vice president of chief counsel of global and U.S. compliance.

Mitchell Karman has been named vice president, counsel and U.S. chief compliance officer.

Cloherty previously was a partner in the litigation practice group at Testa, Hurwitz and Thibeault L.L.P., Boston. He also has worked in the U.S. attorney’s office in Boston and as a trial attorney for the U.S. Justice Department’s tax division.

Karman was an associate general counsel at New England Life Insurance Company, a unit of MetLife Inc., Boston.
