The company that has been operating as Minnesota Life Insurance Company now is making “Securian Financial Group Inc.” its marketing name.[@@]

The St. Paul, Minn., company was founded 125 years ago as Bankers Association of Minnesota.

Today, the official name of the top-level holding company continues to be Minnesota Mutual Companies Inc., but the official name of the main operating subsidiary has been Securian Financial for 7 years.

Minnesota Life has been promoting the Securian name as its distribution name for several years, and now executives believe the time is right to apply the Securian name to the company’s “umbrella identity,” the company says.

A Securian employee helped celebrate the name change earlier this month by getting onto the roof of the company’s 21-story office building in downtown St. Paul to unveil a rooftop version of the torch-bearer in the company’s logo.

Securian will continue to use Minnesota Life to identify its life insurance company operations and some other operations.
