A large Hartford health insurer has closed on a $250 million acquisition of a privately held company that sets up limited-benefit health plans.[@@]

The insurer, Aetna Inc., says it hopes to turn the mini med company, Strategic Resource Company, Columbia, S.C., into a platform for reaching out to uninsured workers.

Strategic Resource was founded in 1976 and now employs 320 people. It serves more than 700 employers in 46 states and the District of Columbia.

Aetna will be identifying its newly acquired subsidiary as “SRC, an Aetna company.”
