Health maintenance organizations continue to expand in many U.S. markets.[@@]
Although total U.S. HMO enrollment is shrinking, HMO enrollment increased in about 25% of all U.S. metropolitan statistical areas between July 1, 2001, and July 1, 2003, according to InterStudy Publications, St. Paul, Minn.
Enrollment increased in only 22% of the large markets, but it increased in 41% of the markets with a population under 250,000.
