Legalization of same-sex marriages would have only a small impact on federal tax revenues, according to the Congressional Budget Office.
Revenues would be slightly higher, CBO says. The increase would probably be less than $400 million a year from 2005 to 2010 and by $500 million to $700 million annually from 2011 through 2014, it adds. Those amounts represent less than 0.1% of total federal revenues, CBO says.
CBO stresses, however, that its estimates reflect significant uncertainty because predicting how many same-sex couples would marry is difficult and because data on income, assets and participation in federal benefit programs are sparse.
