NU Online News Service, June 7, 2004, 5:54 p.m. EDT – Louisiana insurance regulators say they will admit 225 new members to the state’s high-risk health insurance pool.[@@]

The pool serves state residents who have a hard time buying private individual coverage because they have health problems. It now has about 500 members.

Successful applicants for coverage must show that they have been residents of Louisiana for at least 6 months and have no major medical insurance. The applicants also must be able to provide at least 2 written denials of health insurance coverage due to any medical condition, and evidence that they are not eligible for Medicaid, Medicare, group coverage or COBRA continuation benefits, officials say.

The high-risk pool does not cover mental health problems or maternity expenses, and it does not cover pre-existing conditions during the first 6 months that the policy is in effect, officials say.
