ING Americas, a unit of ING Groep N.V., Amsterdam, announced the hiring at a teleconference held to celebrate improving sales and profits.

Britton has spent the past 2 years working as a partner at NxtStar Ventures L.L.C., Houston, an insurance industry consulting firm. He previously was president of First Colony Life Insurance Company, Lynchburg, Va., and president of American General Life Insurance Company, Houston.

Britton has a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in mathematics from East Carolina University.

At the teleconference, ING Americas executives also talked about efforts to focus on the ING brand name, streamline distribution channels, and offer agents a choice of dealing with brokerage general agents or company-owned wholesalers.

Overall, “we’re beginning to build some momentum and I think pick up some market share,” says ING Americas Chief Executive Thomas McInerney.
