NU Online News Service, May 7, 2004, 2:18 p.m. EDT – CIGNA Corp., Philadelphia, wants to get its health plan members to exercise more.[@@]

The managed care company is trying to reach that goal by adding a 10K-A-Day benefit to its Healthy Rewards health and wellness discount program.

“10K-A-Day” standards for 10,000 steps a day, and it is a rough equivalent of the “30 minutes of daily physical activity” recommended by the U.S. Surgeon General, CIGNA says.

Plan members who sign up for the 10K benefit will get a pedometer, a guidebook and access to a Web site where they can log their steps, CIGNA says.

Employers can customize the program and add extra incentives for participation, CIGNA says.

CIGNA cites past studies that have shown an average return of $5 for every dollar invested in wellness programs.

CIGNA is setting up the 10K program with help from Health Enhancement Systems Inc., Midland, Mich.
