NU Online News Service, May 3, 2004, 4:44 p.m. EDT – Highmark Inc., Pittsburgh, is laying off 209 of its 11,000 workers.[@@]

The managed care company eliminated 115 positions in western Pennsylvania and another 94 in the central part of the state.

Highmark is making the cuts because it lost more than 400,000 members over the past 12 months, the company says.

Displaced employees will receive outplacement services, at least 4 weeks’ severance pay and help with buying COBRA health insurance, Highmark says.
