NU Online News Service, March 22, 2004, 11:11 a.m. EST – A federal agency has posted the official version of the Social Security Administration Death Master File on the Web.[@@]

Insurers and other financial services companies can use the file to verify the deaths of individuals and prevent customers and sales prospects from trying to steal the identities of the dead.

The National Technical Information Service, the government’s information services clearinghouse, has posted more information about the new Social Security death data service at http://www.ntis.gov/ssa-dmf/
