NU Online News Service, March 8, 2004, 4:14 p.m. EST – The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating MetLife Inc., New York.[@@]

MetLife is responding to an SEC request for information about possible market timing and late-trading activities at a “limited number of” privately placed variable insurance contracts sold through the General American Life Insurance Company unit, according to MetLife’s annual Form 10-K report.

MetLife says it is “not aware of any systemic problems with respect to such matters that may have a material adverse effect on the company’s consolidated financial position.”
