NU Online News Service, Jan. 14, 2004, 4:28 p.m. EST – WellPoint Health Networks Inc., Thousand Oaks, Calif., is organizing a program to help doctors in its provider networks in California, Georgia, Missouri and Wisconsin use technology to improve the quality of patient care and cut administrative costs.[@@]

WellPoint will be offering some of the doctors wireless, hand-held systems for prescribing prescription drugs along with 1-year subscriptions to an electronic prescribing service.

WellPoint also will be offering doctors computers that they can use to submit claims through the Internet, and the company will be encouraging doctors to visit WellPoint provider Web sites to review information about member eligibility, claim status and insurance policies.

WellPoint estimates products and services distributed through the program will have a total retail value of about $40 million.
