NU Online News Service, Dec. 10, 2003, 4:32 p.m. EST – New York Life Insurance Company, New York, is celebrating the 75th birthday anniversary of its home office building at 51 Madison Ave. in Manhattan.[@@]

Noteworthy features of the 40-story Gothic tower include 72 gargoyles and a tall, golden pinnacle.

The architect was Cass Gilbert. Gilbert also designed the U.S. Supreme Court building and New York’s Woolworth Building.

The Madison Avenue site was the location of P.T. Barnum’s circus arena in the 1860s and later became the location of the original Madison Square Garden.

New York Life says President Calvin Coolidge participated in the 1928 opening festivities by pushing a button in the White House that unfurled the building’s flag.
