NU Online News Service, Dec. 4, 2003, 3:23 p.m. EST – Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Minneapolis, has hired Russell Swansen to be its chief investment officer.[@@]

Swansen will replace Jim Abitz, who announced plans in June to retire from Thrivent at the end of the year.

Thrivent is a nonprofit financial services organization with 2.9 million members. Its CIO is responsible for $41 billion in general account assets, $11 billion in mutual fund assets and $8.7 billion in variable product portfolios.

Swansen has been a managing director in the Chicago office of Colonnade Advisors L.L.C., Chicago, an investment bank, since 2002. Previously, he was president of PPM America Inc., a U.S. investment subsidiary of Prudential Portfolio Managers Ltd., London.

Swansen has a bachelor’s degree in business and economics from Gustavus Adolphus College and a master’s degree in business from the University of Minnesota.
