NU Online News Service, Oct. 21, 2003, 3:17 p.m. EDT – Members of the Health Insurance Association of America, Washington, and the American Association of Health Plans, Washington, have voted to merge their organizations, the groups say.

The groups’ boards negotiated the deal in September, and the groups expect to complete the legal requirements for merging sometime today.

HIAA Chairman Ben Cutler and AAHP Chairman William McCallum say the merger will increase member companies’ ability to shape the debate about the future of the U.S. health care system.

The combined organization will be known as AAHP/HIAA until the combined board approves a new name. AAHP President Karen Ignagni will be the president of the combined organization, and the organization will have offices in downtown Washington.
