NU Online News Service, May 16, 2003, 3:23 p.m. EDT – The Society of Actuaries, Schaumburg, Ill., is soliciting papers about the risks involved with managing assets in retirement.

The SOA is asking actuaries to submit abstracts or outlines for review by Aug. 15. Completed papers will be due Feb. 16, 2004.

Some of the suggested topics include explorations of legal barriers against annuitization; strategies for combining protection against longevity with protection against the risk of needing long-term care; the effects of long-term care insurance inflation protection on the insurers that offer the protection; and methods for using medical underwriting to lower annuity costs for buyers who have relatively short life expectancies.

The SOA says it will publish the papers it accepts in its print journals, on its Web site or in some other format.

The call for papers is posted at http://www.soa.org/research/managing_retirement.html
