NU Online News Service, May 8, 2003, 3:12 p.m. EDT – Six out of 10 employers that offer disability insurance say they do so to attract or retain good workers, according to a survey sponsored by the Health Insurance Association of America, Washington, and JHA Inc., Portland, Maine.

The researchers who conducted the survey found that only one-third of the 402 employers interviewed see offering disability insurance as a way to help disabled employees return to work, and that only 10% of the employers buy disability coverage for that purpose.

Forty-one percent of the employers said workers understand the need for disability insurance, but 34% of the employers said workers do not understand the need for disability insurance.
