NU Online News Service, Nov. 19, 10:53 a.m. – Anthem Inc., Indianapolis, has joined the rush to set up defined-contribution health plans.

The managed care company has introduced the Anthem ByDesign Personal Care Account program, which combines a high-deductible preferred provider organization plan with an employer-funded personal care account to pay for routine medical expenses.

Annual deductibles range from $1,000 to $4,000, and personal care account contributions range from $500 to $2,000 per employee.

The program includes access to doctors and hospitals in Anthem’s provider network and outside the network, and it also includes coverage for preventive care services, such as annual physicals and mammograms.

Anthem will start by offering the program to large employers that operate self-funded health plans.
