NU Online News Service, Oct. 3, 5:25 p.m. – Benefitfocus.com Inc., Mount Pleasant, S.C., says it has developed software that will give insurers the ability to receive employee enrollment data in the new federal standard format.

The government is introducing mandatory health information data standards to comply with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, in an effort to increase the efficiency of the U.S. health finance system by promoting greater use of electronic data communications.

Benefitfocus says it is starting by releasing tools that will help users share employee benefit plan enrollment information in the new HIPAA 834 format.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of South Carolina Inc., Columbia, S.C., is already using the Benefitfocus software to receive data in the HIPAA 834 format, Benefitfocus says.
