NU Online News Service, Sept. 16, 12:45 p.m. – Coventry Health Care Inc., Bethesda, Md., has agreed to acquire Mid-America Health Partners Inc., Kansas City, Mo., a privately held managed care company controlled by three Kansas City hospital systems.

Mid-America provides or administers major medical coverage for 120,000 people. The company also rents preferred provider organization networks that care for 130,000 members of other companies’ insurance plans.

Coventry, a managed care company, covers 1.9 million people through retail managed care plans and rents networks that provide care for another 295,000 people. Most of Coventry’s PPO rental networks are in Georgia, North Carolina and Iowa.

Coventry hopes to complete the deal in December.
