NU Online News Service, June 19, 4:46 p.m. – New England health maintenance organizations are doing better than HMOs in the rest of the United States at keeping market share, according to Mark Farrah Associates, Kennebunk, Maine.

Nineteen HMOs were doing business in New England in 2001, and they insured about 38% of the population, Farrah reports.

The four largest New England HMOs — Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusets, Boston; Anthem East, New Haven, Conn.; Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Inc., Wellesley, Mass.; and Tufts Health Plan, Waltham, Mass. — controlled 56% of the HMO market in 2001, Farrah says.
