NU Online News Service, June 14, 4:36 p.m. – URAC, Washington, a nonprofit group that sets quality standards for health care organizations, has released drafts of major revisions of its Health Plan Standards and Health Network Standards.

The Health Plan Standards describe the URAC accreditation standards for health maintenance organizations and other tightly knit managed care organizations.

The Health Network Standards apply to accreditation of preferred provider organizations and other, more loosely knit managed care organizations.

The drafts include “core standards” that apply to all types of health care organizations along with other standards that apply to specific types of organizations, such as HMOs or PPOs.

URAC has posted the draft standards on the Web at http://www.urac.org

URAC will be accepting public comments on the drafts until July 26. The group hopes to release final versions of the standards by the end of the year
