NU Online News Service, April 23, 4:18 p.m. – AFLAC Inc., Columbus, Ga., is reporting $183 million in net income for the first quarter on $2.4 billion in revenue, compared with $178 million in net income on $2.4 billion in revenue for the first quarter of 2001.

AFLAC sells life insurance and supplemental health insurance in the United States and supplemental health insurance in Japan. It is known for creating the modern Japanese cancer insurance market.

The weakness of the yen continued to hold down results in Japan, but premium revenue from new sales in Japan was up 4.4%, and premium revenue from new U.S. sales was up 16%, AFLAC says.
