NU Online News Service, April 1, 3:59 p.m. – The Hartford Financial Services Group Inc., Simsbury, Conn., is adding a free estate-tax repeal rider to four of its universal life, variable life and variable universal life insurance policies.

The policies affected are the Stag Variable Life Last Survivor Life II, Stag Protector Variable Universal Life, Stag Universal Life, and Solution Last Survivor Universal Life policies, which are issued through Hartford Life and Annuity Insurance Company.

The Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001 is supposed to repeal the federal estate tax entirely in 2010, but the tax could come back in 2011, unless Congress votes to eliminate it.

The estate-tax repeal rider would take effect if Congress really does vote to kill the estate tax in 2011. If Congress eliminates the tax, the rider would let holders of the affected UL, VL and VUL policies to surrender the policies without paying surrender charges, Hartford says.
