NU Online News Service, Mar. 8, 12:05 p.m. – Kaiser Permanente, Oakland, Calif., says George Halvorson will succeed Dr. David Lawrence as chairman and chief executive of the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals May 1.

Halvorson is now president of HealthPartners, Minn., a nonprofit health plan with 700,000 members.

Lawrence will serve as Kaiser’s chairman emeritus from May till December, Kaiser says.

The Kaiser Foundation is one of the main operating units of Kaiser Permanente, a nonprofit company that helped start the modern U.S. managed care movement. The other major operating unit is a giant group medical practice that represents Kaiser network physicians.

Kaiser now provides or administers major medical coverage for 8.3 million U.S. residents.
