NU Online News Service, Feb. 11, 3:37 p.m. – Kansas Insurance Commissioner Katherine Sebelius today denied the takeover of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas, Topeka, Kan., by a unit of Anthem Inc., Indianapolis.

“I am denying this takeover because it would have cost Kansas businesses, small employers and families millions of dollars in additional health insurance premiums,” Sebelius said in a statement.

Anthem is “very disappointed with what we learned today,” says company spokeswoman Lauren Green-Caldwell.

“We haven’t had an opportunity to review the opinion in detail and we will do that,” Green-Caldwell says. “We continue to believe that we’ve met all the applicable legal requirements and in addition we continue to believe that this partnership is the best way to ensure the continuation of a strong Blue Cross and Blue Shield plan for Kansas.”
