After posting their best performance in more than three decades in fiscal year 2021, college endowments reported more sobering returns a year later. This is not an unexpected outcome as equity markets endured a host of economic difficulties last fiscal year. Endowments fell by a median 10.2% before fees in the 2022 fiscal year, ended June 30, according to a report in Inside Higher Ed. The S&P 500 index dropped 11.9% in that period. The report noted that the news was not entirely negative, as higher education outperformed other sectors. This was especially the case with larger institutions with well-diversified investment strategies. Reports on Ivy League endowment performance returns for the last fiscal year have trickled in, and now are complete. Only one school posted a positive return, but all did better than the 10.2% median loss. See the gallery for the FY2022 endowment investment performances, ranked from worst to best.
