MetLife: More Women Thinking About LTC Needs

Women are twice as likely as men to be very concerned about providing for their own or their spouses’ long term care (LTC) needs.

The MetLife Mature Market Institute, Westport, Conn., an affiliate of a unit of MetLife Inc., New York (NYSE:MET), has included data supporting that conclusion in a summary of results from a survey of 1,007 men and women ages 50 to 70 who have $50,000 or more in household income and $100,000 or more in investable assets.

Just 15% of the men surveyed reported being very concerned about LTC needs, compared with 27% of the women surveyed.

Similarly, only 20% of the men expect to live past 90, compared with 39% of the women.

About half of both the men and the women surveyed said they respond to unexpected financial emergencies by dealing with them “if and when they happen,” rather than by planning for possible scenarios and contingencies.
