Following its February release of an iPhone app that allowed advisors to access their clients' accounts from their smart phones, Fidelity announced Monday that Android users will now have the same opportunity.

Advisors who use the WealthCentral platform can download the new app for free in the Android Market. The app has the same functionality as the earlier iPhone app: client profile information, positions and balances for brokerage and non-brokerage accounts, transaction history details, current account alerts, and up-to-the-minute third-party market news and quote details.

"The Android app is following the same functionality roadmap as the iPhone app," Mitch Rodriguez, who runs Fidelity's mobile platforms, told AdvisorOne. "Both apps will introduce trading capabilities at the same time." Rodriguez said advisors can expect those capabilities to be available in the next couple of months.

An iPad app will also be available before the end of the year, he said.

Ed O'Brien, Vice President, Fidelity"We believe we're the first among our custodian competitors to offer an Android app," Edward O’Brien (left), senior vice president and head of technology for Fidelity Institutional Wealth Services, told AdvisorOne. He pointed to a focus on integration at the mobile app level, adding that advisors who use other platforms like Black Diamond can get a "holistic view" of their clients' accounts while using the app, "not just custodian provided data."

"We've had good success and good activity," O'Brien said. "We're leveraging development efforts so advisors will find a functional parity whether they're using a Droid or an iPhone."
