According to a February 2009 Gallup poll, Americans’ chief financial concern is having enough money to make ends meet.
When asked what was the most important financial problem facing their families, 16 percent of Americans reported “a lack of money” or “low wages” and 15 percent said too much debt. These responses are up from an October poll, which had these at 11 and nine percent, respectively.
Basic economic concerns have eclipsed worries over energy and health care costs. In a 2008 poll, 29 percent of Americans cited energy costs as their greatest concern, the highest percentage Gallup ever recorded for a single financial issue.
A year ago, the top spot, along with too much debt, went to health care, with 14 percent citing it as their main concern, down from 19 percent in October 2007.
