Stress may be clashing with employer moves to get workers to take better care of themselves.

Researchers at the National Business Group on Health, Washington, have based that observation on results from a July survey of 1,502 U.S. employees ages 22 to 69 who work for employers with 2,000 or more employees.

About 88% of the survey participants said they had taken steps to improve their health within the past year or had been doing so regularly for more than a year. But 47% said work demands have prevented them from leading a healthier life.

Only about 54% of the participants reported, for example, that they had gone in for a physical exam within the past year, and only 53% said they had been trying to exercise more or eat better.

About 25% of the participants said they are feeling more stress now than they felt 2 years ago, and 54% cited work and finances as top stress factors. Another 43% cited “work-life balance” as a top stress factor.
